Inpatient Care

All of our Women’s Services RNs are trained to assist our mothers and babies with breastfeeding. From the delivery room to discharge, we are here to support you and your baby in achieving your breastfeeding and health goals. Board certified lactation consultants (IBCLC) round daily in our postpartum and newborn nursery units. Our IBCLCs provide education and recommendations based on the needs of mother and baby. Consultations for inpatient concerns include: latch difficulty, excessive weight loss, hypoglycemia, jaundice, or anatomical abnormalities.

During your inpatient stay, you can expect several routine practices that benefit mother and baby while supporting their breastfeeding relationship. These practices include:

  •  Skin to Skin transition immediately following the delivery of your healthy newborn (both vaginal and cesarean deliveries.)
  • Mother and baby couplets will “room-in”. Our staff provides support in your room through education and hourly rounding to assist you in caring for your newborn.
  • We recommend avoiding the use of artificial nipples or pacifiers as the may interfere with the development of optimal breastfeeding.

Outpatient Services

Sometimes mothers need help breastfeeding, no matter how many times they have done it before. The Women & Children’s Center Outpatient Lactation Clinic is a resource for mothers and babies who experience problems breastfeeding following their stay in the hospital. This includes mothers with early or late onset conditions such as:

  • Difficulty “latching on”
  • Sore nipples
  • Engorgement
  • Maternal yeast infections
  • Low milk supply
