At Kingwood Medical Center, we rapidly diagnose and treat acute heart attacks using interventional cardiology. This is the process of using cardiac catheterization to diagnose and treat heart and vascular disease.
Heart attacks occur because blood flow to the heart muscle is restricted. The faster that blood flow is restored, the less damage is done to the heart and the better outcomes are for the patient. That’s why the “door-to-balloon time” is an important benchmark.
At Kingwood Medical Center, we work closely with EMS providers to achieve a door-to-balloon time averaging 67 minutes – well below the national standard of 90 minutes.
Approximately 1,100 interventional cardiology procedures are performed at Kingwood Medical Center each year. Utilizing four “cath labs,” and our newly renovated and expanded pre-operative and post-operative recovery area, our interventional cardiologists perform:
- Heart catheterization (or cardiac catheterization)
- Balloon angioplasty
- Coronary stent procedures
- Peripheral diagnostic studies and interventions
- Implant pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)
