Our Diabetes Education Program provides information and education to people with all types of diabetes, as well as insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. Participants learn lifestyle behaviors to help manage their conditions and lead active lives. The Kingwood Medical Center Diabetes Education Center is accredited by The American Diabetes Association and follows The National Standards for Diabetes Self Management Education.

What We Provide

Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) and Registered Dietitians (RDs) provide training, counseling, and follow up for each participant in our Diabetes Self-Management Program.

This includes:

  • How to Manage and Live with Diabetes
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring
  • Reducing risk of complications
  • Goal Setting
  • Physical Activity and Exercise Guidance
  • Intensive Insulin Therapy
  • Assistance with Weight Management
  • Meal Planning, Healthy Food Choices, Portion and Carbohydrate Control
  • Who Should Come
  • The program is open to those diagnosed with:
  • Type 1 diabetes (juvenile onset)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-Diabetes
  • Insulin Resistance

The program can help those newly diagnosed, who need an update or review of their diabetes management plan and Insulin Pump users.
Families and support persons are welcomed to attend the visits and classes.

Persons with or without diabetes who need additional nutritional counseling and support can also use our program/services. These patients would need a physician order for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to schedule an appointment.

Many insurance groups provide benefits for Diabetes Education and Medical Nutrition Therapy.  Contact your insurance provider to verify your benefit coverage.


The Diabetes Self-Management Center is a department of Kingwood Medical Center and is located in Suite 176 at the Hospital.

Diabetes Support Group

Diabetes support group meetings are offered, free of cost, to all individuals and family members having type 1, type 2, or pre-diabetes. The meetings are facilitated by our education team and provide ongoing educational opportunities and discussions about new and/or updated information and therapies, as well as provide a forum for individuals to discuss their specific experiences and issues.
