Kingwood Medical Center July 26, 2017

Kingwood, TX, July 26, 2017 — Kingwood Medical Center hosted Ladies’ Night Out - Love Your Heart, during National Heart Month.

Kingwood Medical Center’s CEO, Melinda Stephenson, welcomed the overflow crowd as she spoke about Kingwood Medical Center’s commitment to health education. “Ladies’ Night Out was started several years ago in response to the community’s interest in health related topics. Hosting these events is one of many ways Kingwood Medical Center increases awareness about the risk factors and symptoms of various health concerns in our community.”

Khaled Khalaf, M.D., board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology educated and entertained the group on all matters of the heart – in particular, women’s heart issues. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over age 25 in the United States. Approximately one in three women will die of a cardiovascular event. Thirty-eight percent of women will die within one year of having a myocardial infarction, and 64 percent of women who die suddenly of a heart attack never had symptoms. Some of the warning signs include shortness of breath, back and/or jaw pain, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, palpitations and the sense of not feeling right.  If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Dr. Khalaf discussed the need for a healthy lifestyle, and controlling risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity, Type 2 diabetes and smoking. Heart disease can be prevented though lifestyle changes, medication and early detection. He highly recommended that all women over the age of 50 get checked out and have a cardiologist.

Kingwood Medical Center is an accredited Chest Pain Center, offering an unparalleled cardiovascular team, innovative technologies and specialized programs aimed at preventing, diagnosing, treating and helping patients recover from heart and vascular diseases. In addition, Kingwood Medical Center hosts community events, including Mended Hearts, a unique support group for heart patients, their families and caregivers. There is no fee to attend.
