High-Risk Pregnancy

The Women & Children's Center at Kingwood Medical CenterKingwood Medical Center offers the most comprehensive care available in the northeast Houston area for high-risk pregnancies. The Antepartum Unit monitors mothers on bed rest who need extra support while their baby grows as much as possible in the womb.

Our antepartum rooms are private, single-occupancy rooms with DVD players and all the support and equipment necessary to keep you and your baby healthy. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hospital, and women are encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet.

A maternal-fetal medicine physician supports the unit and provides on-site medical attention in addition to your own OB/GYN or MFM.

Most antepartum patients arrive between 30-32 weeks, and a 3-4 week stay is typical. However, some mothers may begin their stay as early as 9-12 weeks into the pregnancy. Whatever your physician recommends, Kingwood Medical Center can help.

Special Care for High-Risk Pregnancies

All women who have had a high-risk pregnancy or are predisposed to complications should choose a hospital where their baby’s needs can be met as well as their own.

We care for women with high-risk conditions such as:

  • Multiple babies
  • Pre-term labor
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension (preeclampsia)
  • Chronic hypertension (high-blood pressure)
  • Diabetes
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Incompetent or weakened cervix
  • Bleeding disorders (placenta accreta, placenta previa, abruptio placentae)
  • Asthma
  • Post-surgery complications

The patient to nurse ratio in our antepartum unit is 4-to-1 or 3-to-1, depending on the mother’s needs. Rounds are made frequently and as often as a mother’s condition requires. All nurses carry a hospital phone so that patients may call directly in addition to using the bedside call system.
