Kingwood Medical Center Investing More Than $35 Million Adding Floors to the South Tower

Kingwood Medical Center June 13, 2017

Kingwood, Texas (June 13, 2017) — Kingwood Medical Center is investing more than $35 million in the campus to expand the facility by adding a 4th and 5th floor to the existing South Tower.  This newest expansion comes less than three years after the most recent investment of $85 million. The proposed project includes a vertical expansion of the South Tower, which will add one floor with 22 intensive care unit beds and 16 intermediate care unit beds and an additional shelled floor. Shell space will enable the 411-bed facility to accommodate future growth.

“I'm excited about the expansion," said Melinda Stephenson, chief executive officer of Kingwood Medical Center. "We are working to keep pace with our growing community and associated healthcare needs. This is a significant investment in our community and our future.”

Kingwood Medical Center, an HCA affiliated hospital, has provided the community with high quality, cost-effective healthcare for more 25 years. Conveniently located at the intersection of Highway 59 and Kingwood Drive, Kingwood Medical Center (KMC) is the premier healthcare provider for the Northeast Houston area, including North Harris, East Montgomery and Liberty counties. At KMC, they believe in “Patients First” and their commitment to providing patients with quality healthcare close to home has never been stronger. Kingwood Medical Center has more than 450 physicians, 1,500-plus healthcare professionals, and is home to award-winning programs that improve the care and quality of life for patients and families.

The Brain & Spine Center is accredited by DNV as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and is the recipient of the American Stroke Association's Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. KMC is a leader in northeast Houston treating patients suffering from stroke, aneurysm and spinal injuries. Stroke is a major cause of death and disability, and patient outcomes depend on how quickly blood flow is restored to the brain. Treatment options for stroke include thrombolytic medications that aim to dissolve the clot, and interventional endovascular procedures (similar to a cardiac catheterization) to remove it. Successful stroke care requires early recognition, transporting the patient to a designated comprehensive stroke center, and early activation of a stroke team at the hospital. Time loss is brain loss.

The Cardiovascular Center and interventional cardiology program was the first in northeast Houston to offer an open-heart surgery and electrophysiology program.  To date, they have performed close to 1500 open-heart procedures. The comprehensive program is an Accredited Chest Pain Center and is comprised of vascular and cardiovascular surgery, pulmonary diagnostics and stress testing.

The Women & Children’s Center offers comprehensive services from prenatal care through labor and delivery to postpartum care. Along with a Well-Baby Nursery, KMC has Level II and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units on-site for the tiniest patients. For moms requiring a higher level of care, they have a high-risk antepartum unit, designed for moms with “special” needs, both short term and long term. Maternal fetal medicine specialists are available for high-risk moms to ensure the highest quality of care.

The Obstetrical Emergency Department, located at the Women & Children’s Center at KMC houses an OB/GYN in-hospital 24/7. This physician evaluates women with obstetric and gynecologic issues, consults with the patient’s primary physician or OB/GYN, and is ready for any OB emergency that might arise. “The OB/GYN Hospitalist program demonstrates Kingwood Medical Center’s commitment to quality of care and innovation," says Stephenson. "This program and our expansion, not only improves the quality of care for our patients, but also serves to continue the Kingwood Medical Center tradition of leading the way in the overall care of the community."

The Pediatric Emergency Department at Kingwood Medical Center is the only dedicated pediatric emergency center in northeast Houston. Board certified physicians; along with a specialized nursing staff, and a child friendly center are waiting for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition to the OB and Pediatric Emergency Departments, Kingwood Medical Center offers a full-service Emergency Department. With a medical emergency, minutes can make a difference – especially for victims of heart attack or stroke. Getting to the nearest emergency room quickly is vital. That is why KMC’s ERs are proud to provide high-quality emergency care close to home, right in your neighborhood. This facility provides the closest full-service care in northeast Houston. If you are having a medical emergency, call 9-1-1. Do NOT try to drive yourself to the hospital.

Kingwood Medical Center 24-Hour Emergency Department at Fall Creek offers full-service emergency care for everything from chest pains to broken bones, back injury to minor burns and more. When there is an emergency, every second counts, which is why KMC expanded its ER care into the communities they serve. This center brings state-of-the art ER services right in to neighborhood.

One in eight American women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is the best defense against this disease.  That is why The Breast Center at Kingwood Medical Center recently expanded and renovated. This comprehensive breast center provides patients with advanced technology and expertise in breast imaging; including full field digital breast imaging,   3-D or tomosynthesis, bone density and ultrasound. When needed ultrasound and stereotactic breast biopsies and genetic testing and counseling are available.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at Kingwood Medical Center is a 27-bed unit, which provides a full range of therapies for patients who have suffered a stroke, injury, or who are recuperating from surgery. Since the Rehabilitation Program is located within the hospital, patients have 24/7 access to all hospital services, including nursing and physician care, telemetry, respiratory support, imaging, laboratory, dialysis, pharmacy and nutrition. These professionals work in collaboration with each other to provide high quality, individualized care in a structured, supportive environment.

Kingwood Medical Center has an Accredited Sleep Disorder Center of Excellence, an Accredited Diabetes Center and offers a myriad services to patients providing quality care, close to home.
