Kingwood Medical Center (KMC) announced today that it received the 2016 Stroke Excellence Award from the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC). The Stroke Excellence Award for a hospital with more than 250 beds was awarded to Kingwood Medical Center for demonstrating exemplary care, integration with EMS, and collaboration with the community to advance stroke care in the Southeast region of Texas. Seven hospitals in SETRAC’s jurisdiction applied for the 2016 Stroke Excellence Award in the category of hospitals with more than 250 beds. Kingwood Medical Center accepted the award at SETRAC’s inaugural banquet with 600 first responders, healthcare providers and government leaders in attendance.

Over 100 Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) graduates attended the Fall Festival held on Sunday, October 25th at Kingwood Medical Center with their families spending time with the neonatal team who cared for them. This year, attendees enjoyed balloon art, games, pumpkin decorating and live music at the 6th Annual NICU Reunion Pumpkin Patch Festival.

Aortic dissection is a life-threatening emergency. It occurs when the inner layer of the aorta, the large blood vessel branching off the heart, “dissects” or tears. Blood leaks through the tear into the wall of the main aorta, causing the inner layers of the aorta to separate. This condition most frequently occurs in men in their 60s and 70s and the mortality rate is very high. Only a few survive.

Kingwood Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses attended the Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) two-day review course held on August 6 and 7 at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center to ensure their practice is consistent with established standards of excellence in caring for acutely ill patients and their families. The CCRN course is a comprehensive review of the core curriculum to prepare intensive care nurses for the national board exam.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse Kathy Holified has worked in the NICU at Kingwood Medical Center for 22 years. She has been a witness to the tremendous growth and expansion of The Women and Children’s Center at Kingwood Medical Center and she loves taking care of the hospital’s tiniest patients. Nurse Kathy also enjoys mentoring the summer junior volunteers working in the NICU. However, this summer was particularly special because she discovered one of her student volunteers graduated from Kingwood Medical Center’s NICU 19 years ago and was her former patient.

In celebration of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, The Women and Children’s Center at Kingwood Medical Center hosted its 3rd Annual Baby Fair on August 1st to illuminate the long-term health benefits of breastfeeding, provide ongoing support and promote community resources for new moms. Over 365 expectant, new and experienced moms attended the event.
